I'm also confused. I know that first you have to figure out what every side is equal to, but I don't know how to figure that out. You can't divide by 4, because it's not a square, and I'm still not sure how to use the one-fifth
The width is one-fifth of the length. (another way to say the same ting is that the length is five times the width) Make a list of the possbililites(make a chart?)
so if the perimeter is 42 you first have to find what the length is and the height so then you have to find 2 numbers that equal 42 and that is 22 and 20 divided by 2 length 11 and width is 10.
you have the perimeter (42 meters) and you know there are 4 sides. We also know that the width is one-fifth of the length. so you have to use this formula. C to D = A to B. B to C = A to D. that formula meens that B to C has to be the same amount of meters as A to D. and A to B has to be the same amount of meters as D to C.
I am aslo confused but, I think you should name the width x and the lenght 5x. Then add x+x+5x+5x= 12x. Now you would have 12x =42. Then divid both sides by 12. Then reduce the 42/12 to 7/2 which would = 3.5. The lenght = 5*3.5=?.
you have to make a rectangle and lable the 2 withs x over 5 and the lenghths x. If we add all 4 sides up we should get 42. So x plus x= 2x and x times 1 over 5 plus x times 1 over 5 = 2 over 5 times x. Then we got 2 and 2 over 5 x = 42. From here we devided by 2 and 2 over 5. 42 devided by 2 and 2over 5 = 17.5. this is the longer length.to find the width you need to multiply 17.5 times .2,which is 1 over 5. that gives you 3.5. then you do 3.5 plus 3.5 and you get 7. Then 17.5 plus 17.5 = 35. Finally you do 7 plus the 35 and you get 42.
I think we finally got the length and the width (although I saw different answers) but we need to move on. Honestly, I'm clueless. We can't just divide by 4, because the triangles are different sizes. Maybe we can use the right angle (probably) but how? I'm going to stop listing how we can't do it. Does anyone know how we can?
HERE... Let's start making a chart... Start with some number for the width and then use 5 times that for the length. If the width were 4 the length is 20, the perimeter would be 48. (too much) If the width were 3 the length would be 15, perimeter would be 36 (too small) Keep going...
first i did x+x+1/5x+1/5x=42. Then i hanged x+x into 2x. 1/5 +1/5= 2/5. So i then added 2+2/5 to get 2 2/5 x =42.i then changed 2 2/5x into 12/5 x = 42. then i flipped 12/5 to 5/12. after that i did 42/1 times 5/12 and got 210/12. I divided 210 by 12 and got 17.5. The problem said the width is 1/5 of the length so i divided 17.5 by 5 to get 3.5. So i added up each side and my equation was 17.5+ 17.5+ 3.5+ 3.5 =42 meters.

I am confused on how to start this problem?
I think you are supposed to do 42 divided by one-fifth but i am not sure.
I'm also confused. I know that first you have to figure out what every side is equal to, but I don't know how to figure that out. You can't divide by 4, because it's not a square, and I'm still not sure how to use the one-fifth
I agree with noam and maital about being confused. and there is a right angle so we know that has to be 90 degrees
The width is one-fifth of the length. (another way to say the same ting is that the length is five times the width)
Make a list of the possbililites(make a chart?)
so if the length is 5 times the width then in a chart we should pick a width and make it 5 times more for the length
i am also confused.if the length is 5 times longer than the width you need to find out the width. i think you do that by finding 1 fith of the length
sorry not the width the piremitor
This is really confusing. I know that the width is one- fifth the length but that wont help you if you don't know the width or the length.
so if the perimeter is 42 you first have to find what the length is and the height so then you have to find 2 numbers that equal 42 and that is 22 and 20 divided by 2 length 11 and width is 10.
so the A&b triangle plus the C&d triangle is the same area as the abcd rectangle.
I agree with rachel, but I don't fully understand how to figure this problem out.

i think you can do 1/5 divided by 90 because we all know that the square on the bottom is 90

I think but am not positive but I think you do 42 multiplied by .2 to get the answer.... does anyone agree???
i do not agree i think that whatudo is divide 42 by two whichis 21 then divide that by 5 which 4.2 so the width is 4.2 and the length is 16.8
I finally got the length and the width (thank you Mrs. Cooper) now how do you figure out the dimensions?

The length and the width ARE the dimensions.
HERE...
Let's start making a chart...
Start with some number for the width and then use 5 times that for the length.

I agree with Leora. Once you get the width the length is 1/5 of the width so you multiply the width x 5 which equals the length.
first i did x+x+1/5x+1/5x=42. Then i hanged x+x into 2x. 1/5 +1/5= 2/5. YES!
17.5 AND 3.5 ARE THE CORRECT DIMENSIONS!
