There are 400 students enrolled at CastletownSchool.Of these students, 85 study French and 50 study Spanish. If 120 students study either French or Spanish, how many students study both French and Spanish?
i think i got the answer! The way i did it after i read everybody else's comments is i subtracted 120 from the total number of students do French or Spanish.
I am glad you remembered the Venn Diagram...that is a great strategy to use for this problem. Remember... "120 students study either French or Spanish", means out of the 400 students 120 are taking one or both languages.
Here is something to keep in mind... 120 students study either French or Spanish (one or the other). That means that if 85 study French and 50 study Spanish that would be a total of 85 + 50 = 135. That helps you to realize that 15 study have to study BOTH (since 135 - 120 = 15).

remember the thing that mrs. cooper did the day before break. The things with the circles. This is the exact same thing except a different problem.
You have to draw a diagram with the two circle overlapping each other.
Ya, I agree w/ them both. Draw a circle diagram.
first you have to draw a ven diagram. After this step you mark you circles either french or spanish...........

I meant to say that do French or Spanish!
so we would need 3 circles, becaus theirs are 3 diffrent options but i tink 300 are doing french and 200 are doing spanish
i cant figure out how many are doing both
i agree with everybody so far first put the names of the subjects in each cirlce after doing that i agree with rachel t. about the subtracting part.
i am also getting confused with 120 either and then the how many study both it is a little bit confusing to keep up with
