PROBLEM OF THE WEEK #10


The four-digit number A55B is divisible by 36.
What is the sum of A and B?

I think the first step to figuring this problem out is guessing what "a" and "b" are and go forth from there.

I wonder if "a" or "b" or even both can be 10 or above? just a thought. my guess is no but i could be wrong.

This problem may take some time....if it is four digits it cant be 10 or above.

The question is how do find what A and B are equavelint to. That's the first step. Figuring that out.

i geus what you have to do first is to take a geus what A B equals and then see if 36 can go into the number

I think guessing would take too long. It could be a very big number or a small number or a number you never thought of.

This is what worked for me:
Make a chart of 10,20,30... then when you see that the number can be in between two of the tens start with ones _1, _2, _3...
then you shoud get it. That's what worked me.

If a number is divisible by 36 then what else must it be divisible by?

I think that figuring out what A and B are, is too hard. An easier way to do this is to list all the multipies of 36 which is still kinda hard. But all you need to do is start off with a high number so it will already be in the thousands. It might take a while but it is a lot easier than figuring out what A and B are.

I think the answer has to have at least one even number becuase thirty six is an even number.

the number must be divisible by 9 and 4

so if a and b have to be single digit numbers and the divisibility rule is if the sum of the digits in the number is divisible by 9, the # itself is divisible by 9

so, by adding two numbers to ten(5+5)
you need it to equal a multiple of 9
so you can add 8 and 9 to make 27
or 2 and 6 to make 18

You know that there is no divisibility rule for 36 but there is one for six. You have to make A and B numbers that will let the entire number be divisible by six. So for instance A can be 1 and 7 can be 8. Then you go from there and see what of those possibilities is divisible by 36

but the number 8559 (8 being a and 9 being b) isn't an even number
but if you reverse it to 9558 (now 9 being a and 8 being b) It is even but it isn't divisible by 4

Maybe if it is 6552 or 2556 it will work because they are both even, divisible by 9 and 4. So i think the answer is 8 because 6+2=8
