Amy passed around a basket of strawberries to the girls at her party. Before the party she ate 5 strawberries and gave a friend 3. Eight girls arrived at the party. The first girl took a strawberry, the second girl took 3 strawberries, the third girl took 5 strawberries and so on. After the last girl took her strawberries, the basket was empty. How many strawberries were in the basket at the beginning?

You have to remember that she ate 5 and gave her friend 3 and then add that to all the other berries eaten by her other guestst so that means you get 72
I agree the answer is 72.
i got 82, but i could be wrong.
let me think about it
let me think about it for a while
☻
this is very hard
This is an extremely hard one that I will need to think about for a few days.

this problem is hard but i got 72.
no it's 81, but let me doublecheck
this problem is kind of hard but i finally got 72
then i got 64... this is wierd......
it cant be 74
i mean 64
i just then got 72, so you guys are right!!! :)
i just double checked and it really is 72
72
you just need to add all the times people ate strawberries and then it is really easy
what about the other problem????
i'm going to the other problem, even though i already know what it is, i just wanna doublecheck
Can someone comment specifically on the strategy they used or the first few steps they used to solve it?
I just dont understand, I got 32. I wonder what i did wrong?
never mind now i got 72.
Sarah just try it again, and if it still doesn't work, maybe figure it out a different way.
first u have to figure out how many strawberries each girl took, then you have to add it up, at least that's what i did.
Thanks for the tip, I finally got 72, there is a pattern!!!
5+3,1+3+5...
the pattern is that each girl took 2 more strawberries than the last. so, 1+3+5+7+9+11+13+15=64 strawberries. plus the 8 before the party, equals 72 strawberries.
Great ideas! You are really helping each other...that's the idea!
i also think it is 72
I guess it helped that we all gave each other clues so we can put it all together. Just like Noam and Mrs. Cooper, and Mrs. Topper, and Jessie gave some good ideas and clues when I read them.
i added it all up and also got 72.
I
Glad you were able to get onto the blog, Maital!
Y'all have all done a really GREAT job of helping each other to solve the problem. Try to help each other with the strategy and not just give the answer. The answer IS 72. Using the clues, she ate 5 and gave a friend 3 at the beginning so she we already know she had 8 strawberries. Then the eight girls took the following numbers: 1,3,5,7,9,11, 13, 15. So if you add all of these plus the original 8 that will be 1+3+5+7+9+11+13+15+ 8 = 72!!!!
I hope you'll be able to use this problem to help you with the next problem of the week(POTW#3).
I am proud of you - there were some really helpful strategies here!

it depends what 'and so on' means. if it means 1 3 5 and repeat than the answer would be 30. if it means 1 3 5 7 and so on after that than the answer would be 72.
since 1 strawberry has for 1 person, then 7 strawberries is the 4th person, so then 5th person would be 9, 6th 11, 7th 13, and 8th 15. so calculate that all up, 1 + 3 + +5 + 7 + 9 + 11 + 13 + 15 and sum of that is how many strawberries were in the basket, but don't forget the first one when she ate before with her friend 8 strawberries. so the answer is 72.
Yes, it is 72
that was kinda easy once you did it
i agree i got 72
Jessie your right it is pretty easy once you get the answer. You wonder why it was kinda difficult to get started in the first place.
I also get 72
I also got 72
